Aoki Toshio worked was a newspaper cartoonist and achieved success as a a portraitist. He was probably best known for the murals he hand-painted in the homes of prominent Americans nationwide. The deity Shoki has Chinese origins and often appears in Japanese sculpture and painting of the Edo period (1615-1868). Legends vary, but a common theme is that Shoki protects people from demons and evil.
