Australia, 1864–1933) studied art in Edinburgh and Antwerp as a young man. His early work—including many landscapes with figures—shows the influence of Belgian traditions. But beginning in 1885, a close friendship with another member of the group, George Henry (Scottish, 1858–1943), led him toward more decorative work and symbolism.
