Australia, 1864–1933) studied art in Edinburgh and Antwerp as a young man. His early work—including many landscapes with figures—shows the influence of Belgian traditions. But beginning in 1885, a close friendship with another member of the group, George Henry (Scottish, 1858–1943), led him toward more decorative work and symbolism. In 1890 the two collaborated on The Druids—Bringing in the Mistletoe, a richly textured and ornamented winter scene depicting an ancient Celtic ceremony.
