Deluxe Jigsaw puzzles by Pomegranate! 1000 Pieces! Artist Giovanni Paolo Panini. Finished size 29" x 20".

Interior of St. Peter’s, Rome, 1731 by Giovanni Paolo Panini (Italian, 1691–1765). The image reproduced here is from the collection of the Saint Louis Art Museum in St. Louis, Missouri, one of the nation’s leading comprehensive art museums.

Giovanni Paolo Panini worked his entire life in Rome, providing foreign travelers keepsake images of the well-known sights of the papal city, including the beloved basilica of St. Peter’s. This version is one of the best of the more than twenty of the interior of St. Peter’s that Panini painted. By setting the point of view low to the pavement and using light to focus attention into the distant nave, the artist captured the grandeur of sheer size, an essential component of the experience of visiting the famous church. Panini rarely varied from the truthful depiction of his subjects, although in this case he placed the papal arms on the ceiling of the second bay rather than the third, most likely to enhance the sensation of vast scale.

Thoughtfully conceived and engagingly intricate, Pomegranate's 1000 - Piece interlocking jigsaw puzzles combine superb color reproduction, stunning and unusual images, and heirloom - quality construction to delight generations of puzzle solvers.

I love this puzzle! It's for somebody who likes a challenge. I am having to work it with my powerful OED magnifying glass to see the minute details. When I first dumped out the pieces I thought I might have met my Waterloo, but once I got the border done, I realized I could do it.

This was a great puzzle - very challenging and satisfying to work on. One weird thing, though, is I wound up with 4 missing pieces (I am sure they are in my house somewhere), and THREE EXTRA PIECES that didn't fit the puzzle at all! They looked like they should fit in terms of the graphics on them, but the sizes didn't match any of my open spaces. Very odd!
