As a homeschooling family, I'm always looking for a fun way for my kids to learn and sharpen their skills. This game makes you engage your brain and yet you're enjoying yourself. A little challenge of the skills is good for the whole family.

I got this for Christmas and LOVE it. It is fun to play solo, but lots more fun with a group or pair. I encourage every family to get one of these games. Not much more to say, but did I mention it was fun?

I'm more of a word-game person myself (Scrabble and Bananagrams are among my favorites), but Sumoku is so much fun! I thought it would be an interesting challenge to try a math/number game since my brain is a little rusty in those sectors. There are a few variations described on the instruction sheet--so far I've just played the regular multi-player version. Variations include solo sumoku, speed sumoku, team sumoku, and spot sumoku. All have basically the same point, which is to construct or find combinations of numbers that add up to multiples of the "key number" (there is a die included which is used to determine the key number). Each tile has a number (1-9) and one of 6 different colors. Colors can only be used once per row/column, but numbers may appear multiple times in the same row/column. For the multi-player version, players get points for the sum of the rows/columns they construct. Once all the tiles are used up, the player with the most points wins. Game-play is very simple and easy to understand once you've read the directions. The game itself, however, is more challenging than you might expect. "Combining numbers to create multiples of 4? NO PROBLEM!" Right? Ehhhh...not really. Especially once the game gets going, and multiple positions open up for different combinations (which ultimately determine your points!). The each-color-only-once-per-row-or-column rule also makes things interesting as the game progresses. The packaging is well-designed and practical. The cone-shape works well because the bag stands on its own, making it very easy to draw new tiles out of the bag. It zips securely so you don't have to worry about tiles spilling all over the place, and the material it's made of is sturdy so it should hold up over the years! I highly recommend Sumoku to anyone looking for a fun, challenging game. As I mentioned at the beginning of my review, I tend to be a word-game type of person. I tried Sudoku once and it totally lost my interest within a few minutes. Sumoku, however, is a number game I can enjoy. (*I'm a 20-something female and have only played this game with other 20-somethings. I can't comment on the entertainment/education value of this game for younger children)
