How to Frame a Puzzle

Many people like to frame completed puzzles. There are many ways to do this, but the best way to frame a puzzle is to have it done professionally. Customers have also had puzzles framed at one of the do-it-yourself framing stores if you can find one in your area. Remember, a puzzle when completed, glued and framed can look like a work of art so make sure it is done correctly. We know it may be extremely difficult to cart a completed puzzle down to a store so you may want to do some research first and look around for stores that will frame your finished puzzle for you.

You should take down the dimensions and if you choose, have the frame pieces built for you. Take them home, and then assemble the puzzle in the frame yourself if you do not want the store to frame the puzzle. If you wish to have it done professionally, have the clerk make an art-print transport sleeve for you (usually 2 pieces of cardboard taped together like an envelope) take it home, then slide the puzzle in the sleeve. This will keep the puzzle intact and protected from the weather, while you transport it back to the store.

Some customers like the metal frames for puzzles because they come in a large variety of colors. Metal frames have grooved channels where mounting hardware can be secured. (so you can hang it on a wall). The boards that back the puzzle should be strong and capable of withstanding the puzzle glue and humidity. Some customers place the glue on the board first and then assemble the puzzle over the glued board. The puzzle is then delicately positioned on top of the backing board and pressed smooth. Some customers have used double-sided tape instead of puzzle glue, but be forewarned, it must be very strong tape and there should be several strips running down the center to prevent the puzzle from bowing.

Puzzles should be covered with glass or a nice transparent plastic sheet after they are framed because the cover will protect the puzzle from people touching it with oily hands. The cover will also help secure the puzzle from collapsing or bowing from within the frame. Many customers recommend using conservation glass with built-in UV protection which will keep the puzzle colors looking vibrant for many years without fading. Once the puzzle is framed, it will look great and last a long time without any worry.
