Puzzles were originally cut from wood, dating back to the 1760s, when European map makers pasted maps onto wood and cut them into small pieces. Wooden puzzles often feature whimsies, or figure pieces, that are in shape of animals, letters, objects and more, usually relating to the theme of the work.
