Vogue heralded the opening of the “Riviera Season” with its Motor and Southern Number, which intended to “broaden a woman’s horizon.” Helen Dryden (who in the 1930s would become one of the first woman auto designers) was tasked with capturing the lifestyle of luxury and leisure enjoyed by the international set who followed the sun to the South of France. There, Vogue reported, “the different resorts along the Côte d’Azur are linked together like jewels on a chain.” Dryden drew a gem of a dress, possibly one of the “organdie frocks for Southern wear” advocated by the magazine, worn by a veiled woman shaded from the sun by a parasol and accompanied by a spotted dog whose long, lean lines echo her own.
