Heritage Day

When I saw that April 18th is the International Day for Monuments and Sites (also known as World Heritage Day) I thought it was a great topic for this month’s puzzle blog. There is such a huge variety of puzzles featuring famous sites from around the world in a such a variety of styles, I figured there were plenty of choices for my fellow dissectologists, no matter what your taste!...CONTINUE READING

World-Wildlife-Day

Besides being a dedicated dissectologist, I’m also a very zealous zoophilist. I absolutely adore animals—furred, feathered, finned—I find them all fascinating. No surprise then that my stash includes a plethora of animal and wildlife-themed puzzles of all kinds. It’s only fitting that my blog for this month celebrates World Wildlife Day...CONTINUE READING

Dog-Walk

Whether you’re a full-fledged jigsaw junkie or an occasional, casual puzzler I’m sure you can relate. Sometimes it’s so easy to get absorbed in a puzzle that you lose all track of time. I tend to do this far more than I care to admit. Sometimes the only thing that breaks my puzzling reverie is the sound of muttering and mumbling by someone none too happy at being ignored. “Just a couple more pieces…” I answer, and when “a couple” invariably becomes ten or twenty pieces, the impatient mumbling turns into a few loud woofs from under my puzzle table. Bounce is clearly stating that it is—once again—long past time for his walk...CONTINUE READING

Chinese-New-Year

If your New Year’s resolution was to spend plenty of time enjoying jigsaw puzzles, I hope your year is off to a great start! It’s always seemed strange to me that January, a month in the dead of winter--or summer, depending on which hemisphere you’re in—kicks off the “new” year. (We can thank the ancient Romans who moved the start of the year from March to January, the month named for Janus, the god of all beginnings.) In my humble opinion, the Lunar New Year--often called the Chinese New Year in the West—makes a lot more sense!...CONTINUE READING

Diners-Drive-Ins

Diners have been quintessentially American eateries for over a century and have been featured in just about every facet of pop culture. Just think of all the movies and TV shows where the neighborhood diner was a focal point. Heck, there’s even a Food Network series devoted to them! It’s no wonder that diners and drive-ins are a popular nostalgic theme for so many jigsaw puzzles...CONTINUE READING

Armchair Travelers' Souvenirs

You’d never know it based on the past few years, but I absolutely love to travel! Whether it’s by plane, train, or automobile I’m all in, and someday I need to add a ‘ship’ to that list and take an Alaskan cruise. Since a trip to Europe was cancelled thanks to Covid a few years ago, my passport has been in a drawer, and my excursions have consisted of driving one state to the east to visit my Dad. I’ve suddenly become the epitome of an armchair traveler, vacationing vicariously watching episodes of “The Amazing Race!” Clearly, I need to pack a suitcase and go…somewhere!...CONTINUE READING

Fall Folaige Tour

No doubt about it—autumn is my favorite season. I’m no fan of heat and humidity and I sunburn in mere minutes, so I’m one of those people who can’t wait for the “ber” months to begin and the leaves to start turning. My only complaint about fall? It doesn’t last nearly long enough! Those beautiful reds, oranges and yellows fade far too fast, and I know it won’t be long before I’m trudging through snow instead of walking through a blanket of fragrant fallen leaves. Fortunately, I’ve found plenty of autumn-themed puzzles to stretch the season just a bit longer and enjoy some beautiful fall scenes any time. I won’t get away to enjoy the maples in Vermont or the aspens in Colorado this year, but I can still take my own fall foliage tour close to home and on my puzzle table!...CONTINUE READING

Puzzling is for the Birds

No question, my favorite place to put together puzzles is at the table in my travel trailer, where there’s a big window that provides plenty of natural light. Our annual camping spot is right next to a large mulberry tree, so I have bird feeders hanging just a few feet from where I sit and enjoy visits from my regulars—a few pairs of nuthatches, a variety of finches, downy, hairy, and red-headed woodpeckers, and of course, a squirrel or two! For me, it’s puzzling paradise!...CONTINUE READING

Peace, Love & Puzzles

Even though I was born too late to be part of the 60s hippie culture, I think I’ve always been a bit of a flower child at heart. Since August is the month the Woodstock Art and Music Festival was held (in 1969) and also happens to be when Hippie Fest is held in my town for a weekend, it seemed like the perfect time for some peace, love and puzzles with a nostalgic bohemian vibe...  CONTINUE READING
