Christmas-Puzzling-2024

Here we are in December. Thanksgiving was a week ago, so the food has had a chance to settle and the leftovers are pretty much gone. In my home that means it’s time to haul the Christmas boxes out of storage, decorate the house, and set up a tree. Then, with all that done, it’s time to start my Christmas puzzles!...CONTINUE READING

The-Countdown-2024

I’ll start with a confession.

In over 50 years of solving jigsaw puzzles, I had never, until last year, heard of something called an “Advent puzzle.” November of 2023 was the first time one of these came to my attention, when it showed up in my house as a present from my wife. She bought it as a novelty, and its slower pace was definitely a change from my usual “get this finished quickly” style. So, starting on Dec 1 and for the following 23 days, I worked my way through the box, one 42 piece puzzle at a time. At the end, I connected all of these small images and had a single 1008 piece picture...CONTINUE READING

the Traveler-2024

1981...That was a long time ago, for sure. It was the year I graduated high school, it was the year I entered university, and it was the year I first became a genuine world traveler. Born and raised on the west coast of the U.S., I had made several trips north to Canada, and had been to Mexico a time or two, but before 1981 that’s as far as I had gone...CONTINUE READING

Spice-it-Up-2024

At several points in my life I’ve tried my hand at becoming a better cook. I’ve purchased cookbooks, asked family and friends for tips, and opened my mind to trying new tastes for my meals. Somehow, though, none of it has ever stuck with me...CONTINUE READING

National Kitten Day

Didn’t I write about kittens, just recently? Well, I think National Kitten Day is the perfect reason to be writing about them again!  Those who read my December blog were introduced to my two current cats, Meeko and Miss Piggy. As much as I love those two troublemakers, this blog won’t be about them. Today you’ll be meeting the cats of my past....CONTINUE READING

Fantasy

Confession time. I’m a little over 60 years old, and I’m still playing fantasy games. Apparently that's a bit of an anomaly.  Statistics online say only 15 percent of gamers are over 55, which means I’m older than over 85% of other players. And, as the oldest participant in my Dungeons and Dragons group, I can’t disagree with the stats...CONTINUE READING

Bike to Work Day

I got my first bicycle when I was 7 or 8 years old. It was a purple Schwinn, with a banana seat. I didn’t have a sissy bar because I thought it would just get in the way. When I was 10 or 11 I got my first ten-speed bike, the Free Spirit from Sears. It’s easy to remember this one because, although it was a Christmas present, I had to pay for half of it myself. I spent the whole year saving money, storing it in a little brown envelope in my top dresser drawer. It was so exciting to hand the cash to my parents and to finally have a bike with gears!...CONTINUE READING

Earth Day

Since 1970, April 22 has been recognized around the world as “Earth Day.”  The day was established to bring awareness to the state of our planet because, as environmental awareness increased, people realized things were looking pretty grim for Mother Earth. At the time, cars were using leaded gas, unregulated manufacturing plants were filling the air, waterways, and ground with pollutants and carcinogens, and air quality was bad enough that in September, in Southern California, I could barely see the mountains right behind my house. It was obvious that the planet, and its people, needed change...CONTINUE READING

All-In-The-Stars

I grew up in the 1970s.

There was a lot going on in those years, though much of it wasn’t something a schoolkid followed too closely. Here in the U.S. the news was about Vietnam, Richard Nixon, Civil Rights, and an energy crisis. To take our minds off politics we had TV shows like “Welcome Back, Kotter,” “The Love Boat,” “Three’s Company,” and many others that are still talked about today. At the movies there was “Jaws,” “The Godfather,” “Grease,” “Star Wars” and, one of my favorites, “Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.”...CONTINUE READING
