Christmas-Around-the-World-2024

When I was 9 years old, we moved away from MA where I was born to CT and left our extended family behind. Because of this, we always drove back to MA to spend Christmas at my aunt’s house. While I loved seeing the family, I hated that my parents made us open our Christmas presents days before at home, so we wouldn’t have to lug all our presents with us. I craved being in our own home on Christmas day with our own traditions. Now that I’m grown up, I’m happily able to do that and am a big fan of holiday traditions! I also delight in learning about how others celebrate and decided to write a blog that touches on traditions from around the world....CONTINUE READING

Christmas-Card-Day-2024

Isn’t it jarring how, at some point in late November, the realization suddenly strikes that Christmas is just around the corner? For most of the year, the holidays felt so far behind in the past, and then – BAM – Starbucks’s red holiday cups are here, and CVS pharmacies everywhere are hawking holiday decor. I think a lot of you would agree that the season really feels here once Thanksgiving is behind us and the Macy’s Parade has ushered in holiday music, and, especially for the younger ones among us – Santa Claus....CONTINUE READING

By-the-Book-2024

48% of adults in the US profess to enjoy jigsaw puzzles, while 78% say they read for pleasure. I would love to know what the percentage is that relish both. I’m convinced that the crossover would be high! I myself often listen to an audio book while I puzzle, and when I’m done puzzling at night, I usually read an actual book to lull my wide awake puzzle brain into sleep. The hypnotic effect of my eyes moving back and forth on the page works better than melatonin!...CONTINUE READING

Wysocki-2024

Thanks to my Mom’s love of early American decorating and design, I grew up a big fan of painter Charles Wysocki and my large (and still growing!) shelf space devoted to Wysocki puzzles is a testament to that. Obviously, there are a lot of us out there, with Facebook groups for his fans to sell and swap items, an annual calendar, and the fine folks at Buffalo Games regularly releasing new puzzles. Although he passed away in 2002, his art remains as popular as ever...CONTINUE READING

National-Candy-Day-2024

With Halloween gone and Thanksgiving right around the corner, who can even think about more candy. ME!!! I’m not the only one, because there is a day dedicated to candy. It’s National Candy Day which is held on November 4th each year.

It’s hard to imagine that when candy first came to America, only the wealthy could access it. I mean can you imagine not being able to satisfy your sweet tooth? I read a little about this day dedicated to all those candy cravers on National Today’s website. They went on to describe how candy became more accessible to all people, not just the wealthy, during the industrial revolution...CONTINUE READING

Black-Cats-2024

October 27th is National Black Cat Day, a day dedicated to celebrating black cats in the hopes that more of you will bring one home from a shelter, as almost twice as many are left there compared to other tabbies. This is because many consider them to be unlucky, or even, as Pope Gregory IX declared back in 1233, demonic. When my mother’s Assisted Care Home went to a shelter to get a cat, I was thrilled when she came home with and rescued a black cat. My mom’s main caregiver…not so much. Poor Whiskey frightened her at first, but I’m happy to report he has won her over, as he truly is the sweetest cat! Maybe one will win you over too?!...CONTINUE READING

Back-to-School-2024

As I’m writing this blog, it’s September 1st – shortly after the midpoint of Labor Day weekend. After a gray, cloudy morning, the sun has peeked through the clouds to say hello before Sunday draws to a close. Though the season doesn’t officially end until later in September, Labor Day is that last backyard party punctuation of summer fun before the reality of fall comes crashing into our lives.

Even though I’m long out of school at this point, this period at the tail-end of summer always reminds me of back to school season. In high school, that meant buying school supplies – new pencils, notebooks, a backpack, maybe even a new pair of shoes. In college, that meant picking up textbooks for a brand-new set of classes and moving back into a dorm room. I went to college at NYU here in the city, and every time I walk around Washington Square Park (the epicenter of the university’s campus life), especially around move-in day, I get a rush of nostalgia remembering those heady days...CONTINUE READING

Buzzworthy-Puzzles

When I told people that my next blog would feature bug-themed puzzles, most’s initial reaction was, “Gross! Why?” Is it any wonder with initial reactions like this that there was a reason to declare July 14th National Be Nice To Bugs Day? As a girl who captures and releases spiders when they’re in the house, I thought I’d get on board with the spirit of the day, which encourages people to stop the unnecessary killing of insects, by sharing insect-themed bugs ON my puzzle board this month! ...CONTINUE READING

Board-Game-Puzzles

Who could be bored with all the hobbies out there? I mean really, hobbies are what get me through the workday. They give me something to look forward to and I find it so relaxing when I can just sit down with no interruptions (most of the time) and partake in the hobbies I love. Being an introvert, I’m totally cool with hobbies that require little to no interaction. I must admit that I have a lot of hobbies that aren’t just puzzling, one of which is board games. The great thing about puzzles is that you can find artwork that goes with just about any hobby. It’s like layering multiple hobbies...CONTINUE READING
