Jan Van Eyck's Arnolfini Portrait (1434) appears to be a straightforward depiction of a wealthy merchant and his wife. But take a closer look, and a more intriguing image emerges. The room in which the Arnolfinis pose is laden with images that signal wealth, have religious implications, or are just odd. The chandelier, stained glass windows, intricately woven rug, sandals, fur-trimmed robes, mirror, dog, and oranges are all signifiers of incredible wealth in 15th century Belgium. Many of these images also do double duty, indicating not only wealth but also conveying allusions to religious and fertility motifs. It is also an important image as it shows the new wealth on display of the merchant class of the period. As a puzzle this really works well in that it is a collection of items showing their wealth like a collage of objects. The couple, Giovanni de Nicolao Arnolfini and his wife Costanza Trenta, will be the center of the construction of the puzzle with the objects in the room being built off of them. The red of the bed and the curtains will also stand out when the pieces are sorted. When you finish the puzzle, you will have an important piece of fine art that gives a historic perspective on wealth and the symbols of it. Clementoni puzzles are crafted in Italy using premium quality materials to enhance the carefully selected imagery featured on each puzzle. All Clementoni puzzles are precisely cut to ensure a perfect interlocking fit and a superior finished product.
