Sir Edwin Landseer (English, 1802–1873)
The Monarch of the Glen, c. 1851
A spectacular vision of a twelve-point stag, The Monarch of the Glen is undoubtedly the most famous of Sir Edwin Landseer’s works, reproduced on everything from prints to whisky labels. The English artist visited Scotland annually and combined his hunting expeditions with sketching trips. He amassed a body of work known for its exceptional depiction of animals, often in relation to humans, making this solitary creature all the more striking. Landseer’s grand monarch now permanently stands watch at the Scottish National Gallery, thanks to a global fundraising campaign to keep this monumental work at home, in Scotland.

The gray tones in this puzzle made it particularly difficult. But the gorgeous artwork and top quality puzzle make it worth it! I don’t usually go for deer puzzles because they generally seem to come from the perspective of a hunter ready to take a shot or they’re too flowery, but this one is different. It celebrates the majesty of the living animal and even the title conveys the power of and the reverence for the great beast. I left this puzzle up much longer than I usually do so I could appreciate the finished product.
I CANNOT BEGIN TO TELL YOU HOW EXCITED I WAS TO FIND THIS PUZZLE. MY SCOTTISH GRANDMOTHER HAD A COPY OF THIS PAINTING ON HER WALL. THE HIGHLANDS WERE ONE OF HER FAVORITE PLACES ON EARTH THIS BROUGHT A HUGE SMILE TO MY FACE. CHER
The picture is beautiful quality, no glare and amazing depth of color. It is challenging but absorbing and so great fun, the pieces are well-cut, no hanging bits or pieces still together. Thick and sufficient different shapes to each piece. Thankfully there is no "puzzle dust" on the pieces which is good because it can be annoying. The box picture is the only picture to follow and the puzzle completed shows a bit more of the stag 's legs then on the box which is fine but threw me when I began. One minor irritation : a few of the blue mountain/sky pieces seem to have small white specks whcih may have been on the picture before the cutting, its not major but slightly detracts from the picture, though you have to look pretty carefully ( as you do when completing the puzzle) to see them. I would buy again and am going to give to a friend and will buy puzzles by this manufacturer again. Hope you all enjoy as much as I did.
Beautiful puzzle, but extremely hard because of the varying colors on the elk & the entire background colors are so monochromatic. It is taking a LONG time to put together.
