“Of all wonderful things in a modern trousseau, the wedding gown is presumably the most wonderful,” noted the editors in Vogue’s May 1, 1913, issue, addressed to the bride-to-be. Still, it’s difficult to imagine anything quite as fantastical as the nuptial look of a pearl-tripped gown with a ruffled lace apron. She holds a stem of fragrant lily of the valley, a symbol of femininity, and seems to float among a kaleidoscope of butterflies, which might be a reference to the goddess of the soul, Psyche, who married Eros, the god of love. Rather than use his initials, Plank, a cofounder, in 1907, of The Butterfly Quarterly, signs off with a winged symbol instead.
