The modern fir Christmas tree actually originated from Germany nearly 1,000 years ago. It’s said that St. Boniface, the one credited with bringing Christianity to Germany, came across a group of pagans that were worshiping an oak tree, and, angrily, St. Boniface struck down the oak tree only for a fir tree to spring up from the roots of the oak tree! From there, St. Boniface took the fir tree as a sign of Christianity, though it wasn’t until the 16th century that trees were brought in the house to be decorated for the Christmas tradition. This tradition is said to have started with Martin Luther, who found a snow-speckled tree so beautiful that he took it inside to light candles in honor of Jesus’s birth.
