Nat Geo Collection Watercolor artist, Jerry Pinkney's illustrations of slavery and the Underground Railroad accompanied Charles L. Blockson's article "Escape from Slavery: The Underground Railroad," for National Geographic's July 1984 issue. The article and Pinkney's striking illustrations have been credited with transforming popular perceptions of the cooperative system that helped fleeing slaves escape to the Northern United States and Canada.
