Celebrating 250 Years with Made in the USA Puzzles

As the United States celebrates its 250th birthday, it feels like the perfect time to shine a spotlight on something many puzzlers may not realize: there are still a number of jigsaw puzzle companies manufacturing right here in the United States.

While there are incredible puzzle brands from around the world, including many beloved European companies, there is something special about opening a box that was designed, printed, and produced here at home. From family-owned businesses to companies with decades of puzzle-making history, these brands continue a tradition that has been part of American homes for generations.

At Puzzle Warehouse, we currently carry 13 brands that manufacture puzzles in the United States. To make them easier to find, we have a dedicated Made in the USA section on our website. You can also look for the American flag icon on product pages, which indicates that a puzzle is manufactured in the United States.

Whether you're looking to support domestic manufacturing, discover a new favorite brand, or simply celebrate America's 250th birthday with a puzzle, these companies have helped keep puzzle production alive here at home.

Buffalo Games

Few puzzle companies have roots as deep as Buffalo Games. Founded in Buffalo, New York, in 1986, the company began as a family-run business selling games through gift shops and mail-order catalogs. One of their earliest successes was the now-famous World's Most Difficult Jigsaw Puzzle, which remains a favorite among puzzle enthusiasts today.

What makes Buffalo Games particularly fascinating is the history behind their manufacturing equipment. When the historic Tuco puzzle company closed in 1984, Buffalo acquired much of the original machinery used to produce those beloved puzzles.

Tuco itself dates back to 1932, when the Upson Company in Lockport, New York, began creating puzzles using their thick wallboard material during the height of the puzzle craze. Their sturdy puzzles became highly collectible and remain popular with antique collectors today. Most of the original machines have be replaced, it is interesting to see the connection between today's puzzles and nearly a century of American puzzle-making history.

In late 2020, the brand also acquired Ceaco and has started producing their images in America too. Today, Buffalo Games produces millions of puzzles each year and has become one of the largest puzzle manufacturers in North America while continuing to manufacture many of their puzzles domestically.

White Mountain Puzzles

White Mountain has become one of the most recognizable American puzzle brands, particularly for their nostalgic collage designs, Americana themes, and larger piece sizes. Founded in 1979 in Jackson, New Hampshire, White Mountain originally focused on advertising products before expanding into jigsaw puzzles in the late 1980s. Since then, they have become a favorite among puzzlers looking for colorful collages, vintage themes, and puzzles that bring back memories.

The very first puzzle produced by Heritage featured the iconic Cape Hatteras Lighthouse, a design that remains a favorite and an important part of the company's history. That early image helped establish the brand's focus on regional artwork and recognizable American landscapes.

More than 25 years later, Heritage remains a family-run company. Today, Karen's son, Matt Everhart, helps lead the brand's sales and marketing efforts while continuing to grow the business and introduce new artwork to puzzlers. One of Heritage Puzzles' greatest strengths is its commitment to original artwork. The company works closely with local photographers and artists to create puzzles featuring unique regional scenes, coastal imagery, historic landmarks, and Americana subjects that might not be found elsewhere.

New York Puzzle Company

New York Puzzle Company began in 2007 when two friends set out to create a puzzle featuring the iconic New York City subway map. What started with just six puzzle designs quickly grew into a recognizable brand after they exhibited at the New York Toy Fair.

For a growing independent company, this move represents an important investment in both quality and American manufacturing, and we're excited to see what comes next for Aurora.
