Rothenburg ob der Tauber’s name means “Red fortress above the Tauber.” It is a must-see location in the Bavaria region of Germany. Celts likely inhabited the area long before Rothenburg Castle was built in 1070. The town experienced wild highs and lows over the centuries. One misfortune, the plague of 1634, decimated the population and left the city unchanged from its 17th-century character for over a hundred years. Artists and tourists began recognizing the unique historic charm in the town and began preserving the architecture and history. Because of this, Rothenburg was mostly spared destruction in World War II. Given the option of abandoning the city or having it razed by artillery, German commander Major Thömmes ignored orders and surrendered the town to save it. Today Rothenburg ob der Tauber is a marvel that welcomes over 2.5 million visitors a year to medieval streets and buildings, filled with artisans, food, and fun. Come, walk the fortress walls and enjoy Rothenburg ob de Tauber.
