What Were Jigsaw Puzzles Originally Called
Originally, jigsaw puzzles were known as "dissected puzzles" as they mounted maps onto wood and then cut the countries from the piece of wood beneath. The term jigsaw comes from the special saw called a jigsaw that was used to cut the puzzles. Prior to the 1880s, puzzle making was a process done by hand and an artform to some. However, puzzles were getting more and more popular throughout the late 1700s and 1800s making it difficult to meet demand, thus implementing the jigsaw to save on production time and resources. The Jigsaw itself was invented in the 1880s but only proved to be a key tool to manufacturing jigsaw puzzles ever since.
