The monarch butterfly, or simply monarch, is also known as a milkweed butterfly. During the fall, the monarchs found east of the Rocky Mountains migrate to central Mexico, while those found west of the Rocky Mountains fly to the coast of California. The life cycle of a monarch includes a change of form called complete metamorphosis which has four very different stages: egg, caterpillar, pupa (or chrysalis), and mature butterfly.
