Summer has fewer puzzle pieces, a simplified image from everyday life, and large pieces which are easy to handle. Each piece measures 2" x 2", and the completed 30 piece puzzle measures 8.25" x 11".
For dementia patients, jigsaw puzzles with many pieces and detailed images are too difficult. MindStart puzzles, designed by an occupational therapist, are unique because the images have only a few, simple objects in each image, making it easier for the user to find pieces that go together. This design feature, along with having fewer puzzle pieces and images from adult life, allows the person with dementia to have the right level of mental stimulation and dignified success. Also, the large size of the puzzle pieces helps seniors with vision loss to easily see and handle the pieces. A research study showed that patients with dementia were able to set the MindStart puzzles more independently, with less cues needed, when compared to a child’s puzzle of the same size. This gives the person a sense of accomplishment and gives caregivers respite time.

Fun for summer! Bright clear picture. Puzzle is smaller than I expected--I should have read the dimensions more carefully. Although the info says large pieces, they are smaller than many memory care puzzles.
Larger and low number of pieces make this a good puzzle for someone with dementia or Alzheimer's. The subject matter gives something to relate to past experiences and memory recall.
Got this for my mom with Alzheimer's. They are perfect for her
Another good one for my husband in the nursing home.
My mother is 93 and has recently had a retinal hemorrhage in her right eye, which is her "good" eye...it has reduced her vision considerably. She is no longer able to read or work on the 100 piece large format puzzles that she dearly loved. I purchased two of the 24 piece Mind Start puzzles hoping that she would be able to see them well enough to put pieces together. She completed this one with some help and did find it challenging, but not so much that she gave up. I will keep purchasing them as long as mom is interested and willing to work on them. I hope Mind Start continues to make the 24 piece puzzles for people with low vision and mild dementia like mom!
